Phone Booth Gallery Announces Kevin Tong & Tom Whalen: Info-Rama Art Show Opening On August 23, 2014

info_rama_logo_fnl_bw

Phone Booth Gallery is proud to present, “Info-Rama,” an exhibition of intricate screen-printed infographics crafted by artists Tom Whalen and Kevin Tong. The exhibition opens with an all-ages reception on Saturday, August 23rd, from 7-10pm, at Phone Booth Gallery’s exhibition space at 2533 East Broadway, Long Beach, CA 90803. “Info-Rama” remains on view through September 17th at the gallery and online at www.phoneboothgallery.com.

Infographics have a history that stretches back centuries. French engineer Charles Minard is credited with starting the trend in the early 1800s, making drawings detailing Napoleon’s invasions and pie charts tracking cattle-consumption. With “Info•Rama,” intentionally scheduled to coincide with the start of the school year, Kevin and Tom endeavored to design images that simultaneously functioned as art and resources and could potentially find homes on classroom walls. The screen-printing process used to make each one gives these objects a vividness and tactility that distinguishes them from most educational posters.

For the show, Tong, an illustrator whose work often ventures into the realm of fantasy, has designed a multi-part, brightly colored guide to human anatomy. He also created a fiery, futuristic-looking infographic explaining the life and legacy of forward-thinking engineer Nikola Tesla, after whom Tesla Motors is named. His brief illustrated history of the USS Los Angeles, the rigid Zeppelin airship built by the U.S. Navy in 1924, is noir-like, all black, white and gray.

Whalen, an artist who frequently re-interprets vintage design motifs in his work, has imbued his series of infographics with an old-fashioned whimsy. His guide to the first transcontinental railroad uses fonts reminiscent of Wild West signage, and the mountains looming in the background behind the train cars are simple and stylized. His brief explanation of the life and habits of the stegosaurus is similarly stylized, with the dinosaur pictured at center and colored purple and orange. Whalen plays with size and shape in each of his infographics, using a banner-like orientation for his guides to the Octopus and the Samurai but using horizontal orientations and standard rectangles as well.

Any educator who purchases a print from the show will receive a discount, but the information Tong and Whalen artfully present should appeal to anyone curious about how the world works, whether they have students to teach or not.

See The Cover of Marvel’s Deathlok #2 By Tom Whalen

When Marvel Comics announced their new Avengers NOW! initiative, there were a few big bullet-point announcements. Thor’s a woman; the Falcon is the new Captain America; Iron Man’s getting a Genius-Bar costume change. But for a certain kind of comic book fan, the most important part of the announcement was: Deathlok.

The cyborg hero first appeared four decades ago, but 2014 has seen a veritable Deathlok renaissance. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. put its own spin on the character, transforming J. August Richards’ superpowered Mike Peterson into a scarred killing machine. And in October, Marvel is launching a new Deathlok ongoing series, written by Nathan Edmondson and drawn by Mike Perkins, focusing on sleeper agent Henry Hayes.

Here is the variant cover of Deathlok #2, illustrated by artist Tom Whalen, creator of countless alternate movie posters for MONDO.

Dark Hall Mansion To Release Invasion of The Body Snatchers Print By Tom Whalen On July 22, 2015

$

Dark Hall Mansion, under license from Paramount Pictures, brings one of, if not the, quintessential 1950s Sci-Fi classics to life via artist Tom Whalen’s arresting and contemporary take on the 1956 masterpiece that is “Invasion of the Body Snatchers.” Strikingly hued in bold colors, Tom’s piece elegantly captures this brilliant allegory of post-war McCarthyism and the inherent terrors of unchecked, rampant paranoia. A film at once highly entertaining and exceedingly daring and ahead of its time, “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” didn’t so much as question as openly provoke viewers to wake up to the world then about them.

A world perhaps not as far removed from our current society as we’d like to think. Tom’s Standard edition print is as visually compelling as it is lovely, a unique and clever take on the film’s disturbing alien pod leaf anchors his central imagery while iconic of-era silhouettes accuse and corral the film’s principals, hinting at once of aliens and/or one’s neighbors. Streaking pods and ghosted space elements marry visuals in a restrained, powerful and contemporary piece, all in keeping with DHM’s Seminal Film Series aesthetic that seeks to keep credits to a minimum wherever possible, allowing the artist’s work to dominate front and center for fans. Tom’s Variant edition elevates Sci-Fi palette hues, achieving a deep and moody piece that distinctly contrasts with his Standard, with both editions faithful to the film’s unique tone and undercurrents.

Offered in a standard or variant edition, these screen prints measure 24″ X 36″ and are a must-have for any fan of sci-fi excellence. Both versions of this stunning print will also be offered in an extremely limited, but highly desirable foil edition.

These prints go on sale Wednesday, July 22nd at 9:30 AM PST in the Official Dark Hall Mansion Store. You can view all editions of these prints on Dark Hall Mansion’s official Facebook page or on their official blog.
